Bridging the Digital Divide: Glass Roots Construction’s Role in California’s Middle-Mile Broadband Initiative

At Vero, we believe in building a connected future, and as a part of the Vero family, Glass Roots Construction is proud to be on the front lines of California’s historic Middle-Mile Broadband Initiative (MMBI). This statewide effort is building the nation’s largest open-access middle-mile broadband network, a critical step toward ensuring all Californians have access to reliable and affordable high-speed internet.

The “middle mile” refers to the high-capacity fiber optic lines that carry large amounts of data over long distances. As a key partner in this project, Glass Roots Construction is helping to build this foundational infrastructure. Our work is creating the pathways that will allow internet service providers and other entities to connect on equal terms, bringing more options and competitive pricing to unserved and underserved communities.

This initiative is a massive undertaking, with the state on track to build over 8,000 miles of broadband fiber. The project is moving ahead of schedule, with thousands of miles of construction already underway. The success of the MMBI is a testament to the power of collaboration, and we are proud to be working closely with our partners at the California Department of Technology (CDT) and other state agencies. The MMBI is more than just a construction project; it’s an investment in California’s future. For Glass Roots Construction, this is a chance to use our expertise to create new opportunities for education, healthcare, economic development, and community connectivity for generations to come. We are honored to be a part of this effort to bridge the digital divide and help build a stronger, more connected California.
